The protected area (25 hectares, of which 8 flooded) is located in the Municipality of Barberino di Mugello (Province of Florence), near the town of Galliano, 5 km from Barberino and 30 km from Florence, and is spread over the bank north-east of Lake Bilancino, an artificial basin that originated following the construction of the Bilancino dam to block the river Sieve, completed in 2005 by the Tuscany Region.

The Naturalistic Oasis of Gabbianello is located in a typically Tuscan landscape of great charm, surrounded by large wooded areas, pastures and areas mainly cultivated with organic methods, in a flat area protected by the mountains of the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines and from the relief from Calvana. In 2004 it was recognized as A.N.P.I.L. (Protected natural area of ​​local interest) of the Regional System of Protected Areas of Tuscany, and falls within the WWF Italy National System of Oasis.
Around the Oasis there are numerous architectural works of great historical interest: the Medici castles of Trebbio and Cafaggiolo, the Villa delle Maschere, the Romanesque parish church of S. Giovanni in Petroio, the Roman military Flaminia road.

Birds present in the Oasis of Gabbianello

The diversification of habitats and the favorable geographical position make the Oasis of Gabbianello an important place for the wintering of ducks, in particular Germano, Alzavola, Fischione, and favorable for the nesting of many species, such as the Cavaliere d'Italia, the Tarabusino , the Marzaiola. During migration, the area is frequented by numerous birds, including White Stork, Crane and Greylag Goose. Particular attention deserves the presence of the pink flamingo during the autumn migration.
Among the passerines we find typical species of reeds such as Cannareccione, Cannaiola and River Nightingale. Among the birds of prey, sedentary or of step, we can observe the Kestrel, the Buzzard, the Peregrine Falcon, the Osprey, the Marsh Harrier and the Albanella Royal. The best times for keeping animals are autumn (October and November) and spring (March and April).

Information for the visit

The Oasis also represents a fundamental starting point for the discovery of the local area, with a program of excursions on foot and by mountain bike to discover the historical, naturalistic and landscape wonders of this corner of Tuscany.
Current area facilities:
- Wet area of ​​about 8 hectares, with water depth varying from 0 to 80-100 cm;
- Hygrophilous planitian forest in the area north of the wetland;
- Path for the guided tour of the area, shielded and equipped with five huts for birdwatching;
- Visitor center for environmental education activities, with a small bookshop.
The educational pond: an artificial pond crossed by a wooden pier that allows you to easily observe the animals that live in this ecosystem and the hygrophilous vegetation typical of the wetlands of Tuscany.
- Butterfly garden: this is a space characterized by plants "appetite" by Lepidoptera and microenvironments that favor their stay and reproduction, in which it is possible to observe, photograph and study butterflies in the various stages of development.
- The Campo "Frutti dei Medici" collection: it is an orchard created to allow the conservation of ancient varieties of fruit trees of the Mugello (over 50 varieties), selected and cultivated since the time of the Medici and now at risk of extinction.
The Oasis is open every Sunday and public holidays (from April to June also on Saturdays); closing July-August. Visits for school groups and groups: midweek by appointment.
How to get there
By car: from the Autostrada del Sole (A1, Barberino di Mugello exit) or from via Bolognese following the signs for Barberino di Mugello. Staying on the highway n. 65 turn towards Galliano and after 1 km follow the signs indicating the Oasis (about 6 km from the A1 exit).
